Stringer vs. Block Pallets: Which Construction Is Right for Your Operation?

Serv-U-Pallets Inc. — Mississauga, Ontario

Not all wooden pallets are built the same. The two most common constructions — stringer and block — have distinct structural properties that make each one better suited for different applications.

Stringer Pallets: The Standard Workhorse

Stringer pallets use three parallel pieces of lumber (called stringers) running the length of the pallet, with top deckboards fastened across them. They typically allow forklift entry from two sides (the open sides) and are the most common type used in North American supply chains. They are cost-effective, widely available, and perfectly suited for most standard shipping and warehousing operations.

Block Pallets: Four-Way Entry and Greater Strength

Block pallets use both top and bottom deckboards connected by solid wood or composite blocks at the corners and center. This design allows forklift and pallet jack entry from all four sides, making them far more versatile in tight warehouse environments. Block pallets are also generally more durable and have a higher load capacity, making them the preferred choice for heavy industrial or export use.

Load Capacity Differences

A standard stringer pallet typically handles static loads of 2,500–3,000 lbs and dynamic loads around 1,500 lbs. Block pallets can handle significantly more — often 5,000+ lbs static — making them essential for automotive parts, food and beverage cases, and other heavy goods. Always ask your supplier about the rated capacity of the pallets you are ordering.

Cost Comparison

Stringer pallets are less expensive to manufacture and readily available recycled. Block pallets cost more upfront but offer greater longevity and reusability. For businesses doing high-volume, one-way shipments, stringer pallets offer the best economy. For closed-loop or export use where pallets are returned and reused, block pallets often deliver a better total cost of ownership.
