Canada's food industry operates under strict safety standards that extend to every element of the supply chain — including the wooden pallets that move product from processing to shelf. Here is what food producers and distributors need to know.
Why Pallets Matter for Food Safety
Wooden pallets can harbor bacteria, mold, pests, and chemical residue from previous use. In food processing and distribution environments, a contaminated pallet that contacts product packaging — or worse, exposed product — represents a serious food safety risk. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) protocols both require that material handling equipment, including pallets, be assessed as part of food safety management.
What Makes a Pallet 'Food Safe' in Canada?
There is no single Canadian federal standard that certifies a pallet as 'food safe,' but several requirements apply in practice. Pallets used in food environments should: be free from chemical treatment (avoid pallets marked MB for methyl bromide fumigation, which is banned in Canada); be structurally sound with no protruding nails or broken boards that could contaminate product; be free from visible mold, pest evidence, or unusual odors; and ideally be heat-treated (HT) rather than chemically treated.
Heat Treatment vs. Chemical Treatment
ISPM-15 pallets can be either heat-treated (HT) or methyl bromide fumigated (MB). Methyl bromide is toxic and its use in pallet treatment has been banned or severely restricted in Canada. Always specify heat-treated (HT) pallets for any food or pharmaceutical application. The HT mark on the ISPM-15 stamp confirms heat treatment without chemical exposure.
Grade 1 Pallets for Food-Adjacent Applications
For food producers and distributors, Grade 1 recycled pallets represent the best balance of cost and food-safety appropriateness. Grade 1 pallets are inspected to be free from major defects, damage, and contamination indicators. They are not appropriate for direct food contact applications, but they are suitable for moving packaged food goods in most CFIA-compliant food distribution environments.
