Pallet Grades A, B & C: What Do They Mean for Your Business?

When buying recycled pallets, the grade tells you the quality of what you're getting. But not every supplier uses the same grading system — and understanding the differences can save you from costly surprises.

Why Pallet Grading Matters

Unlike new pallets with documented specifications, recycled pallets come in all conditions. Grading is the industry's way of standardizing expectations. A consistent grading system allows buyers to match pallet quality to their operational needs and negotiate pricing accordingly. Always confirm a supplier's grading criteria before placing a bulk order.

Grade A (Grade 1) Pallets

Grade A pallets are the top tier of the used pallet market. They are structurally sound, free of broken boards or missing components, and consistent in size. Minor cosmetic wear is acceptable, but there should be no splits affecting load capacity, no protruding nails, and no signs of pest infestation or chemical exposure. These pallets perform like new and are suitable for food-adjacent, pharmaceutical, or high-value product distribution.

Grade B (Grade 2) Pallets

Grade B pallets show more visible wear, may have undergone board repairs, and can have minor inconsistencies in size. However, they are still load-tested and structurally serviceable for most general warehousing and transport applications. They represent the best value for businesses running high-volume one-way shipment programs or internal warehouse operations where aesthetics don't matter.

Grade C (Salvage/Scrap) Pallets

Grade C pallets have significant structural damage — multiple broken boards, severe cracking, or missing stringers — and are generally not suitable for commercial use without extensive repair. Some businesses buy Grade C pallets for repair or chipping, but they should never be used to transport goods without full remediation.
